A. bitaeniata is A. bitaeniata. Everything else is just a commercial name, be it a collecting location or a color. Color patterns vary from place to place, but do not necessarily indicate a population locality. TomC and I collected the Curutu form in the Río Shishita instead of the Shishita form.

Now, for confusing part 1 of this species. There are 2 basic forms:

Brazilian populations (Rio Tefé to Rio Tapajós): 2 distinct bands (lateral & abdominal) on a more slender body; males with broad yellow areas on gill covers, but little blue.

Peruvian populations (Upper Río Ucayali to the Colombian Amazon): abdominal band less distinct than lateral band; body more stout; males show many blue stripes and spots on gill covers.

Are these 2 different species? Could be!

Now, for confusing part 2 of A. bitaeniata: It might not be A. bitaeniata!

The type specimens, according to Pellegrin, were collected in the Rio Madeira (Kullander, 1980, "corrected" this to around Leticia, Colombia because A. bitaeniata wasn't known to occur in the Madeira at that time). One of the forms from the Madeira (Porto Velho) has dark markings that are different from the Brazilian form from the lower Madeira. Koslowski called it A. cf. bitaeniata Porto Velho (A216). Is this the type form of A. bitaeniata or is the Brazilian form? More collection in the middle/upper Madeira is needed.
