My keyhole cichlid looks as if there are red worm like things sticking out of its anal hole. its body right before it has a very slight depression. Is this a parasite? What can I treat it with? All my lfs has for parasites is had-a-snail. Thanks

I am not an expert but it seems that your fish may have Camallanus worms (actually not a worm but really a nematode). I have used both Levimasole and Flubendazole to treat this type of infection. I suggest that you search this forum using "Camallanus," "flubendazole" and/or "levamisol" for further information.

These nematodes are highly infectious and you should assume that they have spread to all of the other fish in your tank. Sorry.

I hope this helps.

dh has got it in one
early treatment gives the best chance of survival and poss repeat treatment even in no further signs seen

ps nematodes are commonly called round worms

i dont see metronidazol listed anywhere in the response to your query

no it will not help in the treatment of camallanus
i use levamisol , flubendazol is also reported to work well , you need an anthelminthic medication(dewormer) not an antibiotic(metro)

i know it was a mistake. i got it because the name sounded familar, with the reason being my cichlids before these had some sort of intestinal protozoan. The product I have is Paragon II.
