my question on breeding apisto.

Hello all:

I keep agassizii and Breitbinden in my aquarium tank. My tank is a small tank about 30*30*30 cm for only one pair.
Recently, there are two death on my male fishes. I found out these two male's health become extemely bad after they fertilized eggs. They sank at the bottom of the tank and no appetite for food. I immediatedly change them to another tank and gave them some medicines. But a week later, they still died.One is head hole and the other is ascites.
But all females are in very good status.

I can not understand why this could happen. they were very healthy just 10days ago. Is the fertilizing work caused them exhausted?

Pls help me to resolve the above question. I don't want this happen again.

I cannot be certain what killed your males. I do know, however, that males will often be attacked if they cannot leave the breeding territory of the female. A female typically requires at least a 30 cm diameter breeding territory. Your males cannot leave the breeding territory in such small tanks as yours. The stress of being repeatedly attacked - even if they are not physically damaged - can cause diseases to occur. My suggestion is to remove the males immediately after spawning.
