Hi,

I was wondering if some of the apisto species are capable of cross breeding from a genetic point of view; (just a point of curiosity)..was wondering if that's how some of the variants came to be.

Thanks

Marcus,

That is a tough question. Usually there is at least the chance of cross-breeding within particular groups or complexes of Apistogramma, but specifically far less species will actually have viable eggs in a cross. Of course, most species-forms can cross-breed. IE, cacatuoides "Orange Flash" and cacatuoides "Triple Red" OR agassizii "Santarem" and agassizii "Alenquer", ETC.

Best to keep any similar looking apisto seperate from one another just in case. But fish like agassizii and cacatuoides won't cross because they are so different morphologically, so those can be keep together.

I have no idea what works with fish but with reptiles many people are cross-breeding snakes of different species and even different genera.
