I think I will let nature run it's course - for me there's no rush, just enjoying them immensely. If I decide to get serious on the breeding, I will do just as you suggest (and/or if I get a spawn from a specific pair)...

Background - 6' 100g with 2 male Cac Triple Red, 4 female Cac Triple Red, and some pencils, otos, and shrimp, heavily planted, lots of caves, and well established.

@apistomaster - 20 + 20 would be o.k. and not too much activity for the apistos to feel comfortable? btw, the black darter tetra looks good. I'm suprised to know that they have such similar behaviors.
I have recently moved and the water from the well is 8.0 pH and about 15 degrees KH (268 ppm). Hardness scales that I have looked at, rate that as moderately hard.
I would like to breed some Cacautoides and am wondering if anyone has had success in breeding them in these conditions?

did you feel like that was too crowded overall or too many pencils? or did you feel like you wished you would've gotten a few more? Also, did they school and what water level did they normally swim in?
I'm setting up a heavily planted 6' 100g for 3 trios of Cacautoides. The only other fish in the tank will be Nannostomus Marginatus, and I'm wondering how many I should get? Their main purpose will be as a dither.
Once spawning is successful and fry become sub-adults, what is the colony size that the tank assuming overfiltration would support (in terms of behavior, etc.)? Cacs aren't long lived, only a couple years, right?
