    competing female stole entire brood...

I think I will let nature run it's course - for me there's no rush, just enjoying them immensely. If I decide to get serious on the breeding, I will do just as you suggest (and/or if I get a spawn from a specific pair)... Thanks for the tip.

    competing female stole entire brood...

This is pretty much exactly what is happening, though the mother has given up trying to get them back. Thank you for posting this info, wethumbs.

    competing female stole entire brood...

Background - 6' 100g with 2 male Cac Triple Red, 4 female Cac Triple Red, and some pencils, otos, and shrimp, heavily planted, lots of caves, and well established. I had a spawn and the mother was very protective of the resultant fry. One of the other females (also a Triple Red Cac) began...

Is it possible to breed cacatuoides with hard water?

@viejo - did you do anything to condition the water? lots of wood, peat, etc.? and were you raising any apistos also?

    # of Dwarf Pencils for 100g

@freshwaterfishfan - were you breeding any apistos in there? seems like a lot of activity. @apistomaster - 20 + 20 would be o.k. and not too much activity for the apistos to feel comfortable? btw, the black darter tetra looks good. I'm suprised to know that they have such similar behaviors.

    # of Dwarf Pencils for 100g

thanks for the replies, gentlemen. I'm not opposed to doing a split between eques and marginatus. 12 of each?? I'm sure they would get along, right?

Is it possible to breed cacatuoides with hard water?

I have recently moved and the water from the well is 8.0 pH and about 15 degrees KH (268 ppm). Hardness scales that I have looked at, rate that as moderately hard. I would like to breed some Cacautoides and am wondering if anyone has had success in breeding them in these conditions? Also...

    # of Dwarf Pencils for 100g

did you feel like that was too crowded overall or too many pencils? or did you feel like you wished you would've gotten a few more? Also, did they school and what water level did they normally swim in?

    # of Dwarf Pencils for 100g

I'm setting up a heavily planted 6' 100g for 3 trios of Cacautoides. The only other fish in the tank will be Nannostomus Marginatus, and I'm wondering how many I should get? Their main purpose will be as a dither.

    Stocking Species & Numbers for a 6' 100g

Once spawning is successful and fry become sub-adults, what is the colony size that the tank assuming overfiltration would support (in terms of behavior, etc.)? Cacs aren't long lived, only a couple years, right? I'm assuming that I could get parts of the group from different sources for a...

    Stocking Species & Numbers for a 6' 100g

hmmmmmmmm... well, maybe I need to be looking at the cacs again. The pros there would be that there's a wealth of information (I remember reading something about temperature influencing M/F ratios), they are harem breeders, and you guys are right, the LFS would probably buy them, and they...

    Stocking Species & Numbers for a 6' 100g

I'm looking to keep some apistos, and hopefully they will breed for me as well. The main point of keeping them would be enjoyment, however, I would like to sell off any offspring. This means that there would have to be some type of market for the fish, either to enthusiasts or even as...
