They take nutrients in through the leaves too and also the fertiliser will diffuse into the substrate so you really don't need to do this. In fact adding concentrated salts (as that's mainly what these fertilisers are - various salts containing nitrate, phosphate and other trace elements) in a...
Phosphate doesn't cause algae. I've kept planted tanks for years and had to add phosphate to keep plants growing to get good growth. What type of algae do you have because each type is caused by different things and needs a different remedy? Often the cause are too much organic wastes (so you...
How about splitting the tank and having holding the leaf litter back with some bamboo canes so that half is leaf litter and half is more open? It will give a bit more swimming space for the fish as well as the deep leaf litter to try and get them breeding.
Welcome! I've kept and bred dwarfs in high tech planted tanks. Just design it so the plants will provide cover from the lights and get it nice and established before you add the cichlids and they will be fine. I'd go with the pencilfish and otos but any shoaling species will be fine. For...
Females are generally supposed to be the larger, especially in the two larger species but I agree with the post above that it's not always the best indicator, especially in species that aren't sexually dimorphic.
As we've got this little section on here now I thought I'd stick up a few pictures of my Tanganyikans. They're not the greatest photos I'm afraid but the fish are great. I've 6 of each (plus some helianthus babies of various ages) in a 180l tank (about a metre long), 3m and 3f helianthus, 4m...
Go to settings, then General settings, about halfway down is the Thread Display Options and there there's a menu for Thread Display Mode. Set it for Oldest First and it's all sorted!
Transcriptus and ornatus are smaller species whereas the regani are one of the two larger species - maybe they're just not mature yet? BTW I'm sure you know but be very careful when removing the babies or you can get a messy divorce!
I've never kept Julies though so this is just an educated...
Interesting that this is one of those translocated populations we were talking about. Has anyone else seen this behaviour in this form? Could this be a response to a new environment or is it just a fluke behaviour pattern?
Good point and it will vary species by species and even between individuals within a population. We have all seen in broods of fish that some are just more inquisitive and it would be easy to assume that those inquisitive individuals (if they don't get eaten) would wander more widely and spread...
Sorry Ted, I've only just seen this post - must have got marked read by mistake by me at some point!
That is a very good point and I agree. Killie keepers are maniacal in allocating collection codes to fish within the same stream but at different points in the stream. We would have to rely...
Me too, as long as the populations are identified properly! I think elevating different populations to a specific level will help with that too though as many people don't think twice about crossing two P.taeniatus but would maybe not cross two different species But then that's one reason why...
Start with two, it should be plenty but get some good reflectors. You don't need 4 T5 tubes to grow plants unless the tank is more than half a metre deep!
Good luck!
Ted I meant that isolation can lead to rapid speciation but there are loads of factors that govern it, not just the isolation alone. Over time random genetic drift may slowly create new species from isolated populations but that process will take ages. However drop in a selective factor in a...
I ran my 180l tank with just two T5s with good, gull-wing reflectors and grew glosso and HC with that in a nice carpet so I wouldn't have more than two. Did you manage to sort the CO2 out. Sorry I couldn't help more but very busy at the moment (shouldn't really be on here at all!!!!).
