Hello fishy people.
I think these are probably Ap. macmasteri but they are being sold as Ap. viejita ... hoping someone here can give me some backup on what they are. Thanks heaps from Canada.
probably any apisto is ok for a 20L. if you are going to keep the current female in the tank you should try to get others (1m 1 or 2 f) of the same species. If you don't want to breed them then get species that are different than your currenti so they won't interbreed and hopefully will get...
Hi all,
I purchased these as Apistogramma ortegai but after reading posts here wonder if they are actually the cf ortegai/pebas. I have 2 females that have both bred with the male multiple times so they are very proific but I am not sure that they are the true ortegai as they show more than 2...
yes....that is the question we all have to answer...male or female or sleeper...or ,,,, lol
best advice as Mike says is know your fish and always remember that females get yellow coloured when they are mature...
Tough question...3 weeks is a long time....if you're just keeping just the 2 fish in a 60l the water quality shouldn't be too big an issue. The bigger problem is maybe going to be aggression by either the male trying to breed with the female or worse if the female breeds during your absence...
hello from Vancouver Canada. You should be able to locate caca's pretty easily they're pretty common apistos and most breeders and e-tailers have them. Cheers Russ
For me its very hard to sex juvenile apistogramma reliably as they all tend to stay in the female coloration until mature. The exception i've found is with species that have dorsal fin extensions in the males (like cacatuoides and macmasteri) sometimes you can see these early on but for the...
Hey Scott,
Sorry I just have a pair of fish that I am trying to breed and don't have any extra. I did see some at an LFS in Port Coquitlam,BC (Petland). They may ship for you and I also think that Wetspot tropical fish in Portland has some also. Lastly check Aquabid and they will probably...
Hello fellow apisto-addicts.
i am breeding A. hongsloi and have 2 pairs of domestic bred fish that were sold to me as A. hongsloi species. I just picked up a trio 1m/2f of the A. hogsloi form ii from a LFS. I was thinking to mix and match the fish to diversify my gene pool as all of these...
they tend to start straying in the first 14 days and its usually about 30 days till mom is chasing them and ready to breed again . I try to take mine out when she starts chasing them....The difference is that I keep pairs in breeding tanks and my male is kept separate. Once I've separated them...
Hi,
Can you post pictures of your Ap. viejita, as they are probably not actually viejita and will be macmasteri. If you are trying to breed them you will want to make sure what species you have. In the trade most fish sold as viejita are actually line bred macmasteri. There are several posts...
HI Scott,
Right now I've got honglsoi, panduro and steel blues, at .75-1" length and agassizi red and ortegei along with some Nannacara anomala (golden eye) at .25" . Also am working on macmasteri, cacatuoides, atahualpa, aggie double reds and tefe II but not breeding yet..... lol kind of...
cool, they are truly beautiful fish and its easy to get addicted with their personality and the fact that they stay small and can be kept in smaill tanks. Currently I am keeping 10+ different types and they are all breeding so fry are coming now and soon! Lots of fun except water changes lol.
you can check afishionados in Manitoba or Below Water in Montreal both carry apistos sometimes and Below Water only does wild caught exotics.
I also breed Apistos but I am in Vancouver and usually sell locally or to the LFS.
