I'm just after people's opinions as to what sex this fish is. I think it's a female but just wanted to check with you guys.

Well the male that's in the tank isn't trying to beat it up at all if that helps?

.OK, it probably is a female. Next question is are the 2 fish A. sp. Tefé? The wavy stripes typical of males aren't really visible in the photos. Does the male ever show continuous wavy stripes?

I haven't noticed any wavey stripes but they have only been in the tank a couple of weeks. I bought them as Tefe red so thought they were that?

Nice fish.

I think the suggestion is that <"they may be a form of A. agassizii">.

The river Tefé has two similar, but distinct, species that belong to the <"agassizii-complex">, these are A. agassizii and A. sp. Tefé.

The male Apistogramma sp. Tefé should have (diagnostic) <"red wavy stripes"> situated below the lateral band. If your fish doesn't, it isn't A. sp. Tefé

Definitely looks more like one of those. Any differences in keeping them? Still a nice fish in my opinion.

Leaves are still a useful addition. Have a look at <"All the leaves are brown">.

I think Mike just means that they don't need the extremely soft, acid, low conductivity water that specialised "Black water fish" need to breed. These parameters are from Linke and Staeck "American cichlids 1: Dwarf Cichlids"
Lago Ara on the left bank of the Lower Rio Negro pH 4.3, total hardness, carbonate hardness both less than 1, conductivity 10 micro.S.

As A. agassizii, they still need soft, clean water, but it doesn't have to be "black-water" conditions. Have a look at <"Bob Wiltshire's page"> on them.

cheers Darrel
