Hi all,

You can still use a canister, if you put a big sponge on the intake.

I use the drilled PPI10 sponge blocks they sell for Koi filters etc. This is on a maxi-jet power-head, but I use the same blocks on the intakes of Eheim externals etc.

Any biological filter system will work if it's properly maintained, doesn't produce excessive current - and doesn't capture the fry. I've used air-driven sponge filters for decades in apisto breeding tanks. Since I have many tanks in one place an air driven system is less expensive for me than a pump/power filter in each tank. Now I'm slowly changing over to mattenfilters, which seem to work just as well but are visually not as distracting as sponge filters. I hardly even see them in my older metal frame tanks!:) Some even have clumps of Java Moss starting the grow on them. Don't know if that's good or bad.
