Hi there
I brought this domestic breed apistogramma female. She was sold as a female apistogramma agassizii but she doesn't look anything like any others I have seen. She is approx 3cm long
any help would be appreciated.

Hi Victoria,

you are right, your fish is definitely not A. agassizii. It's a resticulosa-complex species. I would say A. sp. Wangenflecken. And it could be a male.

... but I have to admit, it could also be A. sp. "Steel Blue". And after closer inspection, this is even more likely to be the case.

Thank you for helping. I have only just got into apisto and still learning. We don't seem to have many different breeds here in new Zealand. I would like to get him/her a companion if I can find one the same :)

As long as you are into Apistos you will never stop learning - e.g. I have just learned something about sp. "Wangenflecken" and "Steel Blue" ;) I'm certain now that yours is A. sp. "Steel Bue". Unfortunately they are very hard to sex, when of the size of your fish, so I can't tell you whether you should look for a male or female.

Hey there
found a more experienced person at the fish shop. Yes it is a blue steel. And I now have a lovely male to go with her.
Thank you so much for your assistance
