Hi

I've got these from a lfs who claimed they've been imported and were labeled as assorted apistos, I think they're gephyra but never had the specie before so want to find out please? The tail is unusual for a male, could both be females? Also ones having blue patch on face like agassizi males...

Well, it appears that you have a pair from what I can see. A. agassizii from the Rio Negro and A. gephyra can be hard to distinguish from each other even with the best photos. Sadly, your latest photos are still too poor to use for a good ID. The male (top) photo is just too dark and the digital noise cancels out much of the detail. It's the curse of a phone/tablet camera I guess. They just aren't designed for taking photos close up and in dim locations.

Sorry, but I just can't see any details useful for differentiation the species, particularly in the caudal region. Anymore a cell/smart phone is a 'jack of all trades and a master of none'. Even my 10 year old 3.2 MP point & shoot Amazon trip back-up camera (cost me $10 a couple of years ago) can take cleaner pictures.

I have bought a camera now Mike and I hope I could put better pics to help get a correct ID on this fish. Please can you look at this pic and tell me if it is good enough to tell or I zoom my lens more on him? LOL

Much better. It looks like A. agassizii to me. The lack of a lace-like pattern in the upper lobe of the caudal fin together with the lack of a red border on the dorsal fin kind of rules out A. gephyra. The lateral band on one of your photos, in which it is darker toward the head and tail during display is more typical of A. agassizii.

Great thanks. So now could you advise what sort of agassizii could it be? I think it was imported from brasil if that's any help? Anori?

Thanks Mike, but I shall not give up on the ID. Here is a new pic, he is changing so fast and I can see the cadual fin is getting larger.

Hi Mike, I am back again with a new set of pictures. He is growing and getting more colours, so thought maybe this could help to find which population he belongs to. Thanks. :)
