Actually.....some Subocellatus forms do have ocelli in the upper half of their tail....both males and female.

I quite agree with Ted regarding the Polypterus. Even though most Polypterus senegalus and ornatipinnis being sold around are under 12", they can get to be 18-24" . I can bet you a 12" specimen won't think twice before snacking on the Pelvicachromis.

Randall is quite right. There is actually a color form of Taeniatus occuring in thesame waters as the Pulcher species endemic to the Ndonga area.

I've seen quite a number of wild specimens of Pelvicachromis taeniatus "Makoure" and i'm yet to see any males of this form with spots on the soft rayed portion of their dorsal fin. I don't think the fish in the photo is from "Makoure".
The pattern of arrangements of spots on the tail however...
