    kribs body markings faded

I used to have some black sand around the nest area in a couple of my tanks. Now I am in a fry raising phase and want to keep my tanks as easy to maintain as possible.

    kribs body markings faded

There is no substrate. I have many plants in pots though. Do you think a dark substrate would help? As I've mentioned the color contrast has returned to most of them. A few of the largest ones are still a little washed out. I'm pretty sure the diet has much to do with it, either the extra bulk...

    kribs body markings faded

Just an update. I was initially feeding my fry a combination of flakes, frozen daphnia and frozen brine-shrimp. Now I have essentially eliminated the flakes and am feeding them Tetra color bits (small granules) and brine-shrimp. The bits have considerably more bulk than flakes. The...

    kribs body markings faded

Thanks for your prompt reply Randall. Actually it is the larger dominant fry that are tending to be faded. The fin colors are equal to or better than the non faded fry. All are healthy and growing. It seems to start when they are 1/2"-3/4" long. I have a feeling that it may only be happening...

    kribs body markings faded

I have numerous krib fry. Some have the classic high contrast dark lateral line and lighter colors above and below. Many look washed out and have a faded line with the usually light colors above are somewhat darker than normal. I have had adult male kribs do this where they will look washed out...

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

Good to hear your fry are swimming around. You'll have to figure out what works for you with the rams. My adults fall into 2 groups. One of my pairs are fairly good with other fish when they have fry but only a few fry survive. A couple of my other krib pairs severely punish any tank-mates.

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

You think they are terrors now? Just wait until the fry are free swimming and moving about the tank, that's when the real damage begins. I would divide the tank. If the other side of the tank is a little crowded put some of those fish in the 10 gallon. To divide the tank you could get some...

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

I have 2 of my pairs each in a 10 gallon and they breed just fine. Each krib has a different personality, you just have to put them together and see what happens. Giving them their own tank will certainly make your life easier and make your fishes life better to. Some krib pairs get very shy if...

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

If the eggs are gone the female probably ate them. Now that you are waiting for a second batch it is the perfect time to divide the tank or set up a new one. My advise to siphon off some of the fry was meant to save some in case your other fish were successfully predating the fry. I wouldn't...

    Golden Horseshoe order split

Too bad, I would have been interested in seeing the Below Water list. I'm still looking for premium kribs (especially males). If anyone in the GTA (Toronto) knows of any I would appreciate it.

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

You could try siphoning off half the fry to place in the 5 gallon (with some java moss and bbs feedings) and see what happens. I'm not very experienced with raising the fry so I would like to leave them with the parents for at least a week of free swimming. One of my krib pairs have been quite...

Kribs spawned in community tank,, quick question.

It depends on your priorities and (other) tank space. If you want to keep the fry I would move the other fish or divide the tank. Either option should be done when the fry are a few days old and with as little commotion as possible. If they are still just eggs the female is more likely to eat...

    Apisto cross breeding? Newbie question...

I have no idea what works with fish but with reptiles many people are cross-breeding snakes of different species and even different genera.

    Temp vs male/female ratio...

Thanks for the welcome Niel. When you gave the ph and temp parameters was that for an equal sex ratio or skewed for m or f? I find that kribs are so easy to breed that I don't worry if the are monogamous or harem breeders. My experience is with small tanks and I find the females are not...

    Temp vs male/female ratio...

For selling the fry it would be desirable to have and equal ratio of male to female fry. I personally like more males because it is harder to find nice ones and with more male fry there is a wider choice (imho that's if you are planning on holding any back for future breeding purposes). I find...
